The Merchant of Venice
This play has something for everybody: comedy, suspense, a great trial scene, a romantic love story and wonderful poetry.
Two worlds, VENICE and BELMOUNT - Venice is the commercial hub where money is lent, borrowed and invested. It is full of attractive young men-about-town, the "yuppies" of the period, who earn good money and spent it. When they need more, they borrow it from Shylock, a rich money lender and an outsider in Venice. Belmont is a place of enchantment, where Portia is enslaved by her late father's will, by which her husband-to-be must make a correct choice from three caskets. The two worlds clash when Shylock's desire for revenge for perceived wrongs leads to the famous trial scene in which Portia disguises herself to save the life of her husband's friend, the merchant Antonio. One of Shakespeare's most entertaining and successful plays is being presented by Oxford's leading amateur company in a beautiful Oxford setting - the Fellows' Garden of Exeter College with its view of the Radcliffe Camera, All Souls College, the Bodleian Library and the ramparted walls. Let Oxford's magic work on you!
